Evil is what *men say it is.
There is no evil in nature.

*Or what is written in their Holy Books.
Books written, nevertheless by men.

.............................................................................................................

Or, so it seems.
We simply claim anything painful to us, as a species, to be evil.
Disruption of a civil life can be said to be painful, therefor, evil.

This works in the smaller view, but what of the larger view?

Animals slay and eat each other to live.
Some, as cats and humans, kill for sport.
Many males of each species kill other males for dominance.

Death is a painful thing, most of the time.
Is evil merely pain?

Just, unjust, that pain of some sort?
Physical or mental. Are not both physical?

ISTM that evil is an abstract concept within the greater one of "morality" and, as such, cannot be defined by a list of actions or consequences. Like "love" it has a socially defined generalisation within which the individual can/will/must apply personal preference(s).

In common use I suspect that it involves causing serious and unnecessary harm (whether intentional or not?).

Are not most concepts subject to their opposite, and have an inverse.

Examples are ubiquitous, such as Dark being opposite to Light.

If evil is bad then its opposite is good.

But, good for whom, or what. What is the balance, the divide, the split?

I guess my ultimate question is: "Who, or what decides?

"And, why?"

"Are we helpless or non-essential in this choosing?"

My work involves a lot with homicide victims. Yes, evil in this world is very real.
There are no remedies available.
Such is the dearth of healthy family units and healthy neighborhoods.

The village does raise many children.

A bad neighborhood makes for many bad teens to adults.

Some come out evil, because that is what they are accustomed to.

We will stick with the small picture here.
What is evil to men and women.

The larger view is too esoteric and cold, and not at all helpful.

I did want to point out that there are evil forces from without and we can be programmed by them.

Individually, and collectively.
From a growing few, they become many.

Ey? Evil is relative. It's up to individual societies to determine what evil is and punish it accordingly, failing to do so simply encourages it.

Yes, life is suffering. This is the First Noble Truth. Suffering is universal, and not just to humans. Death can come without warning, and to many animals, it comes by starvation or by being eaten alive by another animal. They are not capable of evil.

Evil, I think, is believing deep down that one is the only being in the world. Others are not really real.

I like this post.

If we can make those we hurt as not real, or 'not important', then it becomes so much easier to cause harm.
We pigeon hole our brethren.

'I am real' the rest are shadows'.

Only my Ego matters.

Vanity is a true evil.

Would you define 'small picture'?

I define evil as the privation/absence of good. And only God is truly good.
Small picture, is life, as seen from our eyes, our vantage point.

Life, as seen from minds in the thick of it.

Not seen from afar, not as a viewer, totally cool and detached.

.............................................................................................

If God is SUPREME, then there can be no division of labor, or separation of ACTS.

.............................................................................................

Yours is an anthropocentric view, giving GOD human qualities, and not the other way around.
This is that comforting view, not one that makes us feel as helpless, and having no hope.
Humans need purpose and order. Religion gives us these things.

Good is good to us.
But, we are not the final arbitrator on this.

And, if I remember right, Arb lives in in the Pecos, in Texas.

I don't know what this means. 😔

My view is a biblical one. I don't give God human qualities - God originally created us with godly qualities:

Genesis 1:26
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...

I don't know that I view my beliefs as comforting, but you're right that I do gain hope.

Good is not good to us. A biblical view of good is much different (often opposite) than a human view.

At Christmas time, people sing about peace on earth, and then 5 minutes later, maliciously gossip about the folks they sang the song with - and then they wonder why others can't be better.

For the most part, people seem to despise their freedom. We hate taking responsibility for ourselves. Blaming is second nature.

If you (anyone) genuinely want(s) to contend with evil, we must first and foremost deal with ourselves.

..........................................................................

GOD is responsible for all that happens in our Universe.
All of what we deem as good and what is seen as bad, even evil.

Since we are sentient beings and thinking beings, it would be in our best interests to separate out the good from the bad.
As we see these.

The wheat from the chaff.

To recognize both the good and the bad (in GOD and HIS Universe) and always strive to do good.

Ah, this... (from OUR) vantage point, not so relative to the big picture.

This, being more, a conscious and higher thought level .... of the
survival of the fittest, mandate.

Do good for our species, without doing undue harm to other species.

Live and let live, umm.

Doing good is always a choice. That is our (lower life) challenge, and hopefully for most, a self-mandate.

Why?

To evolve, we must adapt, change properly with life's stressors, and we must co-exist with other prominent life forms.
We are fragile, so fragile.
Adapt or go extinct.

Many life forms have, or will go extinct.
We are modestly unique.

Matter is the Suit of God.
Matter looks and seeks to be alive (in our sense).
Matter is Mind, is The God we seek.

To treat others without a place in the world is is a delusion (an ignorance), one partnered often with greed and anger

You must accept that Demons are real.

Who are these Demons?

The are the Disrupters of The Good Order of Things.

They bring division, chaos and pain. They are sometimes tribal, sometimes, individually evil.

They will join causes and try to steer them in treacherous ways.

We know them, these Demons.
They walk among us.

I suspect only a tiny few know that they are being used.
And, are little fools, and bad meant tools.

Tools for disorder and bad change, that chaos...again.

Some of the leaders are very wealthy and influential. It is these tiny few that know their purpose, know the end game.
They have an agenda, their followers, those lesser Demons are pulled and pushed along.

...........................................................................................................

All are led from Forces from Without.

They move with the flow, they follow the ever-new, the ever-old trend lines.

This conjunction of Jupiter with Saturn in Aquarius (in part) leads the charge, leads this madness, this time around.
Around, and around, again.

..........................................................................................................

There are some here who chuckle at these notions.
Chuckles are free expression, chuckles are foolish ****** in our armor.

You have been told.

Yeah, right.
Hmm.

I do not wish to dissuade any of their religious views.
No.

Religions main purpose is to square our purpose in life to our creation, and our Creator.

A tough sell, in our 'thought' modern world.

I merely say there is more to life than suspected.

Science often pushes those more educated from religion.
The harshness of life pushes many people away from religion, and the notion of a 'just' God.

Science is our best hope to learn God.
To first learn God's mechanics, then His Actions.

Once His Mechanics are fully learned, His Actions will seem plausible.
One, would hope.

We are only a small part of the puzzle and the Larger Plan.

Evil has a historic duality... in Judaism it is held in each person, a choice to be aware of as without evil how could you ever understand good if "good" was the only way of thinking? There is no original sin, and the beginning choices were theirs then to make, but not owned today. Early Christians (Irenaeus, a Greek Bishop) also argued that evil was part of God's purpose, to create imperfect so one could rise from their suffering into a stronger Christian. Muslims also believe in the personal responsibility of suffering, but it is on full faith as one cannot know the mind of Allah.

Good is planned, a mindful effort... chaos (evil) has the advantage of both planned and unplanned with unmindful and ignorant efforts and throws planned right out the window.
