Do men prefer it when women wear makeup?

Let me start by saying that this is a lighthearted post; I'm happily married and not looking for some nefarious motives behind my husband's opinion. I just want to hear some male perspectives.

My husband claims that he thinks I look just as good without makeup as with. I don't. Trust me, I do NOT. If I wasn't trying to remain anonymous, I would post pics of before and after. Case in point, I had a coworker (I worked with kids) years ago tell me one day that she would watch my class for 5 minutes so that I could go put on some makeup, so I didn't scare the children; apparently, the color drains out of my face when I get tired and I look sickly. (She was a good friend, and we had one another's backs, do she wasn't being snarky.)

Perhaps my husband is unusual, perhaps he's stretching the truth in order to be kind, or perhaps all of our years together have blinded him to my looks. 🤣 I enjoy wearing makeup and feel better when I do (though sometimes I just don't feel like it). But I'm genuinely curious what men think about women wearing makeup, or if they think of it at all.

I've heard it said that women wear makeup for other women. Men, what say you? Do you prefer a woman who is made up? What about if you're dating? Does it matter if you've known the woman or been married for a long time? Is there a limit to what kinds of makeup looks attractive, or do you have no idea what I'm talking about it? 😂

And while we're on the topic of appearance, my husband tells me to do whatever I like best with my hair, but he prefers it longer. He claims most men feel this way, and this has been my experience. Would you say that's how most men think? I've seen more than one guy be enamored with damaged, frizzy, long hair over short, healthy hair. Is this a guy thing, or is it just the men I socialize with?

Thank you in advance for a peak inside the male mind.

Late to the party. I'm male. My wife has never worn much makeup and I think she looks fantastic. If she ever decided to get done-up proper I'm sure she'd look fantastic that way too. But not necessary for me. Oh, on the hair...the longer the better. We do "fight" over that :) She likes it shorter for ease. I like it longer for...many reasons.

My wife never wore makeup until recently, red flags are still up.

What is with these girls and the stick on eyelashes and nose rings. I'm like "Girl! You were beautiful, until you punched a hole in your nose and stuck spider leg looking crap on your eyes" just say NO!

It just screams low self-esteem issues to me. I guess the nose ring has some utilitarian benefits. Take her fishing and you have a place she can hold onto your extra fishing lures. "

"Just hang these right here and you can hold them for me, babe"

Also replying to this really old thread. For me it depends on the woman and how well she can put on the makeup. My wife really doesn't wear any, I'm not sure she even has any TBH. She's got a good enough looking face that she doesn't really need it. I'm sure if she wore it she would have an enhanced appearance if nothing else but just even out her complexion. My wife doesn't really know a ton about it though so she isn't too big into it.

She mentioned that she might want to start wearing a little. I think it's because I've put a lot of effort into my appearance and we do a lot of fun things out on the town and she wants to look really nice too. She probably will start wearing a little. Some women are not very blessed appearance wise and makeup is a must for them. Honestly I think trying to actually take care of your skin is going to give you better results than makeup will anyways.

Avoiding sun seems to have done it. My wife is 60 and almost wrinkle free. She is a blondie but has avoided sun like the plague. Easy to do when you're Irish and will just burn to a crisp no matter what :) She and Speedys wife must have gone to "I don't need no stinkin makeup University." She knows how to apply but rarely does. We are headed to an event in 2 weeks. She'll wear a dress (almost never does that) and may wear makeup. I'm secretly looking forward to it. I know she's not. She's been threatening to cut her long hair, but I've been swooning over it so much I think she keeps putting that off :) Again, 60 years old, no dye, and almost 100% blonde with very little gray. She won (I won!) the genetic jackpot.

Yup. I live here at the beach and there are so many women who prematurely aged themselves via far too much sun exposure. Every local "beach babe" I've known that we all lusted after at one point now has a face like a raisin.

Although I mostly prefer it when my wife isn't wearing any make-up at all. That said, there are some occasions when I think she looks splendid all dolled up for a night out with makeup on.

Plus there are also some instances when I actually prefer that she wears makeup.

For example on her own initiative, before my wife leaves to go to work. She will sometimes put some red lipstick on rather generously. Then she will go out of her way to put my rod in her mouth and work on it for a short while (unfinished), with the goal of marking me for the day with her lipstick.

Likewise there are other times on her own initiative, when my wife has dolled herself up with mascara, eyeshadow and lipstick. So that I get to enjoy the visual (including taking pictures) of it all being messed up, when I shower her.

And the above examples are just two of the many reasons, why I have enjoyed being married to my luscious wife for 24 years.

Why is make up a must for women who havent got a very blessed appearance? Do they have to keep to some sort of standard for everyone elses benefit?

Spot on. I don't like the heat anyway and don't sunbathe. I wear face cream with an SPF of 25. I also wear sunglasses a lot because I have really sensitive eyes. I am 67 and still hardly have a wrinkle. The sun is a killer, literally of our skin.

I noticed that when were went to Oz. So many people with really bad skin due to the sun. Living in the UK has its advantages
Wife doesn't unless it's a special occasion like a work gala. Even then she keeps it subtle enough that you wouldn't necessarily notice. I love her look when she does but I think that's more because that's one of the few times she wears her hair down. She's very much a flip flop and ponytail gal.
I don't think I could be with someone that does it heavily. None of my long-term relationships were with someone who did. Not so much for the look but more for the fact that they put that much emphasis and effort into wearing a mask to the world. I can understand those with skin conditions using makeup to cover it though.
My $.02. I think it largely depends on the venue. Everyday: none to a bit. Work: a moderate amount. Nightout: Go for it! It also depends on the application. Applying makeup is an art, thus makeup artists. Caked on poorly applied makeup looks crappy regardless. Skillfully applied makeup enhances a woman's beauty and I find nothing wrong if a woman wants to do that.
I’m in the either way group. My fiancé doesn’t wear makeup very often, even when we go out, which is fine by me. She is attractive without makeup but when she does wear it she doesn’t overdo it. She wears make up that matches her skin tone and ethnicity so it’s subtle. Even the colors she chooses for lipstick aren’t flashy. I met her at work and she never wears makeup to work, so I was attracted to her natural face.
